Issues

Affordable Tuition
Tuition rates at the University of Colorado have risen dramatically over the past several years.  As state funding has decrease, the tuition has risen more than 8% annually over the last five years.  Colorado families  cannot afford any more increases; education at the state's flagship university must remain affordable.  With my background in education and in the Colorado State Legislature , I am familiar with the issues on both sides.  I am ready to take my red pen to the budget and cut any unnecessary spending and focus on controlling the costs.

Preparing Students for the Workforce
The University of Colorado needs to ensure that its students have marketable skills for the global workforce.  Courses and degrees must meet the requirements of not only the global workforce and economy, but the local economy as well.

Administrative Salary Increases
Recently the University of Colorado gave raises to administrators.  I believe that with the current situation of state funding and tuition increases, there should be a freeze on administrative raises.  The CU Regents must put Colorado families ahead of administrators.

Denver Post Voter Guide

How would you deal with the rising cost of tuition?
Freeze tuition; Cut spending; Control costs. A tuition freeze is neither extreme nor impossible. At least one university recently announced a tuition cut.
Would you support asking voters to increase taxes for higher education?
No; these times demand fiscal restraint. An improved job market will increase state revenue and funding for higher education. In 2008 voters rejected a request for taxes for higher education.
What is the key difference between you and your opponent?
Legislative experience: I passed numerous bills to help higher education. Three-term state representative, House Education Committee / House Appropriations Committee. Broad public and private sector experience.
Do you support providing reduced tuition for children of illegal immigrants?
In fairness to all Colorado students, we cannot make exceptions for illegal immigrants who, by definition, are breaking federal law. The federal government must reform immigration law. This
year's immigrant tuition bill would have helped only 250 students. Our state would be far better off to hold the line on tuition for all high school graduates. The CU system enrolls far too few
minoraity groups. Tuition and fees are much too high for many minority families.
Should the legislature pass a law allowing the university to set its own policies on carrying weapons on campus?
The legislature can act only in accordance with the United States Constitution. State courts have already ruled against CU's attempted limitations on concealed carry.  At this time, CU believes that more recent restrictions will pass court muster. Other Colorado campuses already allow concealed carry without problems.
Please list the two or three most important issues to your campaign:
Two issues: Focus in four main areas: Training in marketable skills for our job market; Continuing education to maintain workplace skills; Cross-training into new career fields. World-class postgraduate research/development/training. Use 21st century teaching methods to provide a quality education without indebtedness.
